Before You Install an Awning…

While we can help you install the awning of your dreams, there are a few things you should look into before we get started.  Depending on where you live, you’ll want to ask a few key questions prior to any installation. In cases of commercial properties, we’ll need to be certain we have the necessary permission(s) in place.  Not sure if you need to worry about this?  Of course, you’ll have to check your specific community standards for the final word, but these guidelines will give you a good place to start.

If you live in a townhouse or condo…

Then, you’ll want to ask your HOA first.  Because all of the homes are connected in this setting, you’ll likely have to get approval from the board.  There’s always a question of uniformity and upkeep with these types of residences. Although, we have plenty of awning options in varying shapes, sizes, and durability, your HOA may have concerns about how your choice(s) may impact your neighbors.  For example, if you have a larger option in one color, and the homes on either side have conflicting styles (retractable or otherwise), then it could affect the appeal of the entire community.  To eliminate these issues, just look at your HOA bylaws to begin with.  We can help you find the perfect awning that meets these requirements, and even draw up an estimate you can submit to the board for approval.  Once we get the go-ahead, it’s a quick installation; then you can start enjoying your new awning!

 If you live in a single-family home…

You should have a little more flexibility!  Depending on where you live exactly, you may or may have an HOA to consult with.  But, it’s still a good idea to look into your local zoning laws and ordinances.  Since it’s an awning, rather than a full addition, you shouldn’t need a building permit for this improvement.  As long it doesn’t encroach on your neighbor’s property in any way (even when factoring in runoff), we can give you virtually any awning you can dream up!

If you own a commercial building…

This is one scenario that almost always requires a permit before we begin installation.  Especially when we’re talking about store fronts or other street-side properties, since the awning will jut out into public land. It’s not just an issue of space, but also of safety, since many pedestrians will be under the awning at one point or another.  So, be sure to get express authorization from your local planning committee.  Then, we can work together to include your specific branding on the awning!  The good news is, if you’re simply updating or replacing an existing commercial awning, you shouldn’t need another permit.  Provided we don’t change the size drastically, you should be all set once the initial paperwork is complete!
