Practical Concerns for Any Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom renovations are always exciting!  It’s your chance to completely remodel one of the most-used rooms in your home.  But before you get carried away with thoughts of a huge soaker tub, luxurious marble, and golden fixtures.  Here are some practical concerns you should keep in mind.

This probably isn’t the first thing you want to think about, but it’s definitely an issue that’ll pop up sooner rather than later.  Your new bathroom will only remain shiny and pristine for so long before daily use has you reaching for the cleaning supplies.  Do yourself a favor and think about the problems you have now.  Can we address them at the design level, so you’re able to scrub a little less in the future?

Many homeowners struggle with those hard-to-reach places behind toilets, besides vanities, and around bathtubs.  Fortunately, a renovation is the perfect time to relocate these items, building in additional space, as needed.  You should also think about your grout and other seams.  These areas are notorious for collecting dirt and grime.  That’s why larger tiles and freestanding showers/bath rubs are becoming increasingly popular!

Better Ventilation

Again, this feature isn’t at the top of your wish list, but it’s something to consider.  Because bathrooms tend to hold moisture and trap odors, you should incorporate ways to combat this with your design.  Windows are a natural solution to this problem, since they allow for air flow and natural light.  Unfortunately, placement can be a problem.  If you’re already short on space and still trying to maximize on privacy—you’ll be lucky to get one window.  That’s simply not enough for proper ventilation.  Be sure to add an exhaust fan, too.  One that’s a sufficient size (and strength) for the square footage of your bathroom.  If you need advice, our team of designers and installers can help!

Too Trendy?

Even the fun design decisions come with a practical side.  As you’re choosing your colors, your tile, your fixtures, etc. you want to stay away from anything that’s “too trendy.”  Did you know that, on average, bathroom renovations last about 15 years? So, whatever you pick now, you’ll have to look at for many years to come.  Whether that’s a bright orange accent wall, or mismatched hardware (for an eclectic vibe).

More importantly, if you’re not planning on staying in one place for the next 15 years, then you have to try to view your design options from an outsider’s perspective.  Although you may love bright colors and funky tile accents, traditionally these can be quite off-putting to future buyers.  Unless you want to undo these changes before you put your house on the market, consider dialing it back a few notches.
