Putting in a Patio:  Preliminary Decisions

If your landscape lacks a level gathering place, consider adding a patio to your property this spring!  Patios come in many shapes, sizes, and patterns, so you can pick the one that’s perfect for you!  While we can help you design and install your new outdoor space—just  in time to entertain—you have a few things to decide first.

Location?

Depending on the size of your backyard, this could be an easy decision or a difficult one.  Installing the patio directly off of a walkout basement or main-level exit is a popular choice.  This extends your entertaining space effortlessly between your indoor and outdoor spaces.  However, some people prefer to highlight specific spots throughout their backyard with a strategic patio.  For example, you could install a corner cut option underneath your favorite shady tree.  Or a garden hideaway complete with surrounding landscaping, and even a fountain!  Regardless of what you decide, you should figure this out first so you can determine a design that works well in the space you’ve chosen.

Shape?

We’ve all seen the traditional square patio designs, or even concentric circles, but this is your opportunity to be a bit more creative.  You can really capitalize on irregular patterns to suit whatever space you may have available.  Add a few twists and turns to create different outdoor “rooms” and separate your gathering places.  For example, you may have a main circular patio off your back porch, connected by an irregular pattern to a fire pit and/or garden seating area.  In this case, it’s best to let the landscape dictate your shape, so the flow appears natural.  Be sure to incorporate lighting that highlights the pathway and avoids unnecessary accidents or damage to the surrounding plant life.

Material?

What you use to create the patio is almost as important as where you’re going to install it.  This should complement not just the look and feel of your outdoor space, but also that of your home.  Remember, this should act an extension of your indoor entertaining space, so try to tie in materials and colors already used throughout your home.  This is your chance to highlight favorite features on both the interior and exterior of the house!

When it comes to material, you have a lot of options to choose from, including stone pavers, red brick, flagstone, and concrete.  If you’re looking for a more natural approach, flagstone is a great, durable choice that incorporates a wide range of warm tones from sedimentary rock.  Traditional red brick is a great match for homes already utilizing this material, but it can also clash if you’re not careful.  With more modern properties, we see a lot of concrete patios that come in a variety of finishes and colors.  They’re also quite durable and easy to maintain.  Whimsical pavers create an effect all their own, which can be switched up much more easily than their counterparts.

Regardless of what you choose, though, consulting a professional installer will ensure that your new patio is sturdy and safe for all your family, friends, and guests.  At KCCS Construction, we’re happy to help you implement the outdoor entertaining space of your dreams!  Give us a call today to get started.
